Experience and Equivalency Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training

Program Overview

The purpose of this standard is to ensure that applicants possess the basic knowledge and driving skills to safely operate a commercial vehicle that requires a Class 1 driver’s licence to operate on Alberta roads.

Prerequisites for the course

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Hold a full class 3 licence and be verified by application through Alberta Transportation  
  • Class 1 Medical Certificate (Recommended before registering)

What is included in the course?

  • 24 hours of private driving instruction in truck.
  • 11 hours in the classroom.
  • 6.5 hours in yard training.
  • Tractor-trailer for the driving test.

How long is the course?

Average of 2 weeks.

How many road test vehicles are included?

1 attempt/class 1 vehicle, permits extra paid to the registry.

How many tests can I take?

There is no limit.
